Why do You Have Cellulite?

We’ve all seen the pictures of celebrities in the magazines that are close ups of cellulite loaded thighs and buttocks. They circle them with big red digital pens and proclaim how disgusting they look. This isn’t very nice for the average woman out there who is part of the whopping 90-95% of women over 20 who will suffer from cellulite.
With such a huge amount of women suffering from the “cottage cheese syndrome”, it’s safe to assume that not all of these women are suffering from weight problems. So why do women suffer from cellulite?

Firstly, cellulite doesn’t affect only women. Men can be the bearers of orange peel skin, but it’s far less likely. Cellulite is caused by water, toxins and fat cells pressing up against the connective tissue in the skin. As the pressure builds, little pockets form beneath the surface which looks like dimples. Men’s fat distribution is different to women’s which is why they are less prone to cellulite.

Although being overweight can make the appearance of cellulite more likely due to the extra fat pressing against the collagen, women of all shapes, sizes and race can suffer from the skin condition. The following factors are known to contribute to the production of cellulite:

  • Genetics – Most women who suffer with cellulite will have a close relation that also suffers.
  • Age – As we get older, collagen production slows, meaning the connective tissue in skin is left weak. This makes splurges of fat, waste water more likely beneath the surface of the skin.
  • Hormones – It’s thought that hormones such as estrogen, insulin and thyroid hormones might play some part in the formation of cellulite.

There is still much unknown about the causes of cellulite but medical professionals maintain that keeping a healthy lifestyle can drastically reduce the appearance of the unsightly dimples.
